The forest floor was a carpet of a thousand shades of green and brown, and as I walked, it felt like I was sinking into a giant, mossy pillow. Every step was softer than the last, muffling the sound of my own breathing. I’d expected the woods to be scary, a place of shadows and snapping twigs, but it was… quiet. A good quiet, filled with the rustle of leaves that sounded like secrets being whispered, and the gentle drip of water somewhere I couldn't see.

I looked up, and the sunlight, which had been so fierce and bright in the park, was now fractured. It came through the leaves in dappled patterns, dancing on the ground like tiny golden fireflies. It wasn’t the harsh glare of the open sky; it was softer, warmer, like a gentle hand on my cheek. I noticed, really noticed, the way the leaves were shaped. Some were like little hands, others like sharp stars, and a few were big and round, like pancakes. They were all different, all unique, and they made me feel… calm.

The old bird’s words still echoed in my head. "You don't *need* it, Leo. You only *want* it." At first, I’d been so angry, so sure he was wrong. My kite! My beautiful new kite! Of course I needed it! It was the most amazing thing I’d ever had. It was going to fly higher than any kite in the park, higher than the clouds, higher than… well, higher than anything. It was going to make everyone see me, everyone notice how cool I was.
