The old bird’s words echoed in my head, each syllable a tiny pebble dropping into the still pool of my thoughts. *“You do not need it, boy. You only want it.”* I’d come into this bewildering, ancient forest chasing a splash of color, a flimsy thing of paper and sticks that had promised me the sky. I thought about the bird, perched on that gnarled branch, its eyes like ancient amber, full of a knowing I couldn't quite grasp but instinctively trusted. It hadn't offered me a way to get the kite back. It had offered me a question, a challenge to my own desires.
