Branches clawed at the sky, a tangled mess of shadows and whispers. The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of damp earth and something ancient, something that tickled the back of my throat and made my eyes water. Each rustle of leaves seemed to hold a secret, and every snapped twig under my worn sneakers sounded like a warning. I was deep, deeper than I’d ever dared to go, and the bright, impossible red of my kite was a distant, fading memory. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, a frantic rhythm that echoed the growing fear in my gut. Where was it? Where had that greedy wind taken my birthday present, my glorious, soaring kite?

Then, a voice. Not a whisper of the wind, but a clear, resonant sound that seemed to weave itself from the very fabric of the forest. "Lost, little one?"

I froze, my gaze darting upwards, scanning the dense canopy. My breath hitched. Perched on a branch as thick as my arm, silhouetted against a sliver of pale sky, was a bird. But this was no ordinary bird. Its feathers were the color of twilight, a deep, shifting indigo, and its eyes gleamed like polished obsidian, ancient and knowing. It was larger than any bird I'd ever seen, its presence commanding a stillness that silenced even the nervous flutter in my own chest.
