The forest floor, usually a tapestry of damp leaves and tangled roots, seemed to shimmer with a new light, a light that emanated from within me. The Wise Old Bird’s words, once a confusing puzzle, now clicked into place, each syllable a perfectly cut piece of a grand design. *“You do not need the kite, young one. You need the courage to seek it, the wisdom to understand its loss, and the strength to find your own wings.”* My wings. I’d never thought of myself as having wings before. The feeling of the string humming in my hand, the exhilarating tug as the wind embraced my creation, lifting it higher and higher until it seemed to kiss the clouds. That feeling, I’d believed, was the kite. But now, as I stood in the hushed cathedral of the forest, breathing in the scent of pine and damp earth, I realized that feeling was a spark that ignited *within* me. The kite was just the fuel, a temporary, albeit beautiful, source of flame.
