The aroma of baking bread, a scent usually synonymous with Kabaari’s domain, wafted from the kitchen, but it was not his hands that kneaded the dough with such practiced grace. It was Suanu. Kabaari, perched on his usual stool by the back door, ostensibly polishing his boots, found his gaze drawn, against his will, to the rhythmic thump-thump of her hands against the flour-dusted wooden board. He had always considered the kitchen his sanctuary, a place where his culinary prowess was unquestioned, a testament to his innate superiority. Now, a younger sister, a mere girl, was claiming it, and not just claiming it, but excelling in it.

Suanu, her brow furrowed in concentration, her dark hair pulled back in a simple braid that swung with each movement, was transforming simple ingredients into something promising. Her movements were fluid, economical, a stark contrast to the boisterous energy Nuanae often brought to any task. There was a quiet artistry in the way she shaped the dough, a gentleness that spoke of a deep understanding of the ingredients. Kabaari felt a prickle of something sharp and unwelcome beneath his ribs. It was the same feeling he got when he saw Nuanae sketching with an unexpected flair, or when Efeeloo asked a question that revealed a startling depth of observation. But this was different. This was his territory.

“Smells good, Suanu,” their mother called from the doorway, her voice warm and approving. “You’ve really outdone yourself today. I haven’t smelled bread this wonderful since…” She trailed off, a fond smile gracing her lips.
