Chapter 5
Efeeloo's Keen Eyes
The youngest, Efeeloo, observes the family dynamics. He sees Kabaari's arrogance but also the subtle sting it inflicts, a quiet observer of the unspoken tensions.
Efeeloo, the youngest of the four, possessed a quiet stillness that often went unnoticed amidst the boisterous pronouncements and competitive undercurrents of his older siblings. While Kabaari’s voice boomed, a self-appointed herald of his own magnificence, and Suanu’s focused silence spoke volumes of her dedication, and Nuanae’s eager gestures filled the air with a restless energy, Efeeloo simply watched. He was the family’s silent chronicler, his young mind absorbing the subtle shifts in atmosphere, the flicker of an eyelid, the tightening of a jaw, the unspoken words that hung heavy in the air long after they were uttered.
He sat on the worn rug in the living room, a half-finished wooden airplane resting on his lap. The scent of sawdust and wood glue, a familiar comfort, mingled with the faint aroma of brewing tea from the kitchen. Kabaari was elaborating on his latest academic triumph, his voice resonating with an almost theatrical flourish. “And so, the professor himself admitted that my analysis was… profound. Truly, there are few minds capable of grasping such intricate concepts, but thankfully, I am one of them.” He paused, allowing his words to settle, a smug satisfaction radiating from him.
Efeeloo traced the curve of the airplane’s wing with a small finger. He had heard Kabaari’s pronouncements countless times. Each achievement, no matter how minor, was presented as a monumental victory, a testament to his unparalleled intellect. And each time, Kabaari’s gaze would drift, almost imperceptibly, towards Suanu, then Nuanae, and finally, Efeeloo himself, as if to gauge their reaction, to bask in their presumed awe. But Efeeloo saw something else in those fleeting glances. He saw a flicker of… something. A nervousness? A need for validation? It was a subtle tremor beneath the polished veneer of Kabaari’s confidence.
