Chapter 4
Nuanae's Creative Spark
Nuanae, the third sibling, attempts his own creative pursuits. Though often clumsy, his enthusiasm is genuine, yet Kabaari's shadow makes it hard for his efforts to be truly seen or appreciated.
Nuanae hummed a tuneless melody, his brow furrowed in concentration as he wrestled with a piece of pliable clay. The late afternoon sun, a warm, buttery glow, slanted through the open window of the family’s modest living room, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Around him, the usual symphony of a bustling household played out: Beatrice was engrossed in her books, Charles was sharpening his debating skills against imaginary opponents, and Efeeloo, ever the quiet observer, was meticulously arranging pebbles into intricate patterns on the floor. But Nuanae’s world, for this moment, was entirely contained within the cool, yielding earth in his hands.
He’d always been drawn to making things. Not with the sharp precision of Charles’s arguments or the quiet intensity of Beatrice’s studies, but with a tactile, messy, joyful engagement. His creations were rarely perfect. Often, a limb would detach with a soft squelch, a carefully sculpted face would sag into an unintended grimace, or an entire structure would list precariously to one side. Yet, in those moments of creation, Nuanae felt a flicker of something akin to Kabaari’s assured confidence, a quiet satisfaction that was entirely his own.
Today, he was attempting a small bird, its wings poised as if for flight. He’d seen a magpie perched on the old fig tree in the garden earlier, its iridescent feathers shimmering, and the image had lodged itself in his mind. He pinched and prodded, his fingers smudged with brown earth. A slight tremor in his hand caused one of the wings to droop. Nuanae sighed, a soft puff of air that disturbed the stillness. He tried to coax it back into shape, but the clay was beginning to stiffen.
