Chapter 20
True Greatness Found
Kabaari understands that true greatness isn't about being the best, but about fostering love and growth. His journey from arrogance to support concludes with a heart full of familial pride.
Kabaari watched Suanu, a strange ache in his chest that had nothing to do with hunger or fatigue. It was a feeling he’d been wrestling with for weeks, a quiet storm brewing beneath the surface of his usual, unshakeable confidence. He’d always been the benchmark, the one whose shadow loomed largest over his younger siblings. Their stumbles were his triumphs, their minor victories mere echoes of his own much grander achievements. That was the natural order of things, wasn’t it? He was Kabaari, the firstborn, the one destined for greatness, and they were… well, they were just his siblings.
But Suanu. Suanu had become something else entirely. It wasn't just the way her hands moved, sure and precise, coaxing vibrant life from clay. It was the way her eyes lit up, a fierce, focused glow that mirrored something he’d once seen in his own reflection. It was the hushed admiration that followed her wherever she went, the whispers that weren't of pity or mild amusement, but of genuine awe. He’d tried to dismiss it, of course. He’d offered his usual brand of patronizing advice, the kind that dripped with veiled criticism disguised as helpfulness. "You're getting better, Suanu," he’d say, his voice laced with an insincerity he now recognized as a desperate attempt to cling to his own narrative. "Just remember to keep your lines clean. You have a tendency to get a little… wild with it."
Suanu, bless her resilient spirit, had learned to absorb his pronouncements with a quiet grace that only amplified his unease. She’d nod, a faint smile playing on her lips, and then turn back to her work, her focus unbroken. He’d seen her at the community art fair last month, her stall a riot of color and form. He’d sauntered over, ready to dispense another dose of unsolicited wisdom, but the words had caught in his throat. People were lining up, their faces alight with wonder. They weren’t looking at him, not even glancing his way. They were captivated by Suanu’s creations, by the stories held within each sculpted piece. A particular sculpture, a soaring bird with wings outstretched as if about to take flight, had drawn a crowd of its own. He’d overheard a woman exclaim, "It’s breathtaking! It captures the very essence of freedom!" Freedom. He’d always associated that word with his own unburdened ascent, his solitary journey to the top. Now, it seemed to belong to Suanu.
