Chapter 12
Efeeloo's Gentle Wisdom
Efeeloo offers Kabaari a different perspective, subtly pointing out the unique strengths of his siblings. Kabaari dismisses it, but the words linger.
The afternoon sun, usually a boisterous splash of gold across the family compound, seemed to have softened its edges today, casting long, gentle shadows that hinted at the approaching evening. Kabaari, perched on his usual stool by the open doorway of the main hut, meticulously polished a wooden carving, his brow furrowed in concentration. The rhythmic rasp of sandpaper against wood was a familiar sound, a testament to his dedication to the craft he considered his own. He’d always been the one with the steady hands, the artistic eye, the one whose creations drew gasps of admiration. It was a position he guarded jealously, a quiet but unyielding dominion.
His youngest brother, Efeeloo, sat a little distance away, engrossed in a book with a worn, leather binding. Efeeloo was a quiet boy, his presence often like a soft breeze that you only noticed when it rustled the leaves. He rarely intruded, preferring to observe, his large, thoughtful eyes taking in everything with a silent intensity that sometimes unnerved Kabaari. Today, however, Efeeloo seemed to be wrestling with a different kind of quiet. He’d shift his weight, sigh softly, and his gaze would drift from the page, landing on Kabaari with an almost hesitant curiosity.
Finally, Efeeloo closed his book with a gentle thud, the sound cutting through the otherwise peaceful atmosphere. He walked over, his bare feet making no sound on the packed earth, and stood beside Kabaari, looking down at the nearly finished carving of a hawk.
