The afternoon sun slanted through the kitchen window, painting stripes of warm gold across the worn wooden table. Kabaari, as was his habit, occupied the head of the table, a half-finished plate of stew before him, his gaze fixed on the newspaper spread out like a royal decree. Beatrice hummed a tuneless melody as she cleared away the remnants of lunch, her movements efficient but lacking the practiced flourish Kabaari associated with true domestic grace. Nuanae, his brow furrowed in concentration, was sketching furiously in a worn notebook, his tongue poking out from the corner of his mouth. Even little Efeeloo, usually a whirlwind of questions, sat quietly by the hearth, meticulously arranging pebbles he’d collected from the garden.

He'd captained the football team, even if it was just a local league. He’d aced his exams, a feat that still drew nods of grudging respect from his father. These were the benchmarks, the undeniable proof of his inherent superiority.

“Suanu, are you still fiddling with those… threads?” Kabaari’s voice, though not overtly harsh, carried the weight of dismissal. He didn’t look up from his paper, his eyes scanning the financial section with an air of profound importance.
