The late afternoon sun cast long, lazy shadows across the compound, painting the familiar red earth in hues of ochre and gold. Inside the main house, the air was thick with the comforting aroma of simmering stew and the murmur of ordinary life. Kabaari, as usual, occupied the prime spot on the veranda, a worn book resting open on his lap, though his gaze often drifted, surveying his domain with an almost regal air. He considered himself the undisputed sun around which his younger siblings orbited, their lives a series of minor events that occasionally intersected with his own grander narrative. He had, of course, offered his unsolicited advice when Nuanae had first embarked on this particular project. It involved wood, a lot of it, and a design that seemed to Kabaari unnecessarily complex. “Nuanae,” he’d said, his voice smooth and laced with that familiar, almost imperceptible condescension, “are you sure that’s the most efficient way? A simpler approach would yield a better result, you know. Less… fiddling.”
