The air in Mr. Evans’ study was thick with an unspoken history, a silence that pressed down on Nora like a heavy blanket. She clutched the worn letters, their edges softened by time and countless unseen hands. Across the polished mahogany desk, her father sat, his gaze fixed somewhere beyond her, lost in the labyrinth of his own making. This was it, the moment she had both dreaded and longed for, the confrontation that felt like stepping onto a precipice.

“Father,” Nora began, her voice a small tremor in the vast room. She held out the bundle of letters, a silent offering. “I… I found these. In the room behind the locked door.”

Mr. Evans’ eyes finally landed on her, and for a fleeting second, Nora saw a flicker of something raw and unguarded – surprise, perhaps, or a deep, weary pain. But it was gone as quickly as it appeared, replaced by his usual stern mask. He didn't reach for the letters.
