The weight of it settled on Pastor John not like a sudden thunderclap, but like the slow, creeping dampness that seeps into stone, weakening its foundation. It began subtly, a flicker of unease in the eyes of those he’d known for years, a hushed conversation that ceased abruptly when he approached, a certain stiffness in the greetings that once flowed with warmth. He tried to dismiss it, to attribute it to the natural ebb and flow of congregational life, to the occasional misunderstandings that even the most harmonious communities experienced. The following Sunday, during the coffee hour, he noticed it more acutely. The usual friendly chatter seemed strained, the smiles a little too forced. Elder Thomas, a man whose pronouncements often carried the weight of divine decree in the eyes of many, approached him, his face a mask of solemn concern. “Pastor John,” he began, his voice low and resonant, “I’ve been hearing some… troubling things. Things that require our attention.”
