A Classroom of Friends

The classroom buzzed, not with the usual nervous hum of children trying to figure each other out, but with a different kind of energy – a bright, bubbly, joyful sound that spilled from every corner. He was showing Leo how to make a magnificent paper airplane, his fingers, usually so careful and precise, now moving with a playful speed. Leo, who had once stood at the edge, his brow furrowed with a hesitant curiosity, was now leaning in, his own face creased with concentration and a hint of a giggle. Beside them, Maya, usually so shy she’d hide behind her mother’s legs, was busy decorating a cardboard castle with sparkly stickers, her tongue poking out in concentration. Even the boisterous twins, Sam and Sally, who normally chased each other around the playground like a whirlwind, were sitting relatively still, meticulously arranging building blocks into a towering, wobbly structure, their competitive spirits softened into collaborative efforts.

Nina felt a warm swell in her chest, a feeling so pleasant it made her want to hum. She remembered the first day William had arrived, the hushed whispers, the averted gazes. She remembered the way his shoulders had seemed to slump just a little, a tiny shadow of sadness dimming his eyes. But then, she had seen him, truly seen him, not the wheelchair, but the boy with the curious eyes and the gentle smile. And now, look at him. He was a sunbeam, drawing everyone into his orbit.
