The forest exhaled a sigh, a cool breath rustling the leaves as if in shared apprehension. It was a sound I had heard a thousand times, yet tonight it held a different resonance, a tremor that echoed not in the earth, but within the hollow chambers of my own ancient heart. The pull, that inexplicable tether that had drawn me from my solitary vigil, intensified with the passing hours, a silken thread woven from moonlight and something far older, far more potent.

The hunger, that gnawing void within me, stirred. It was a familiar ache, a primal urge I had wrestled with for centuries, but now, it was tinged with a strange protectiveness, a fierce desire to shield her from the encroaching darkness I felt coiling around us.
