Chapter 9: The Root and the Flame
Elara, Luca, Sofia, and Kael flee down the mountain and into a forest, pursued by Brother Thomas. They encounter a hidden village where a young girl named Lina reveals herself as the fifth spark. With the help of the villagers, they escape through an underground root tunnel, and the silver orb shows them that the next spark lies in the Vatican itself.
The mountain slope grew steeper, and the silver light from Kael's orb flickered across the loose stones. Elara's legs ached, but she did not slow down. Behind them, the horn sounded again—closer now, sharper. Brother Thomas and his men were gaining.
“There!” Sofia pointed to a dark line of trees at the bottom of the slope. “A forest. We can hide there.”
They scrambled down, the New Bible warm against Elara's chest. Luca stumbled, and Kael caught his arm, pulling him forward. The silver orb pulsed gently, as if encouraging them.
