Elara hides in the shed as Brother Thomas searches the garden. She discovers a new message in the book: 'Share the fire with the smallest spark.' She meets a young gardener named Luca, who helps her escape through a hidden tunnel beneath the rose bushes. Brother Thomas almost catches them, but they slip away. The chapter ends with Elara and Luca emerging outside the Vatican walls, with the book's fire growing stronger and a new destination revealed.
The door rattled again, harder this time. Elara pressed herself against the cold stone wall of the shed, clutching the warm book to her chest. Her heart beat so loudly she was sure Brother Thomas could hear it through the wooden planks.
"Search the shed!" his voice commanded from outside.
A shadow fell across the crack in the door. Elara looked around desperately. The shed was small, filled with old pots and rusted tools. There was no other exit. She was trapped.
