The Road to the City of Stone
Elara, Luca, Sofia, Kael, and Lina travel toward the Vatican, hiding from Brother Thomas's patrols. They meet a kind farmer who gives them a ride, and as dusk falls, the New Bible reveals a clue about a hidden entrance. The chapter ends with the group approaching the city walls, a guard's lantern swinging toward them.
The hillside was quiet except for the distant horn, which faded into the wind like a bad dream. Elara let out a long breath and sank onto the grass. Her legs trembled from running, and her heart still hammered against her ribs. Beside her, Lina sat cross-legged, holding her small flame cupped in her hands. It cast a warm, steady glow, like a candle that had never known darkness.
“We can’t stay here,” Kael said, his voice low. He held up the silver orb, and it pulsed in the direction of the road that stretched eastward. “The voice said the sixth spark is in the Vatican. That’s where we have to go.”
“But how?” Sofia asked. She paced back and forth, her hands clenched. “Brother Thomas knows we’re coming. He’ll have every gate watched.”
