Lily’s tiny legs trembled as she clung to a damp blade of grass, the wind still whispering mournful tunes through the battered meadow. Each gust tugged at her wings, a reminder of the chaos that had swept through her world. The familiar scent of honeysuckle and dew was now mixed with the sharp tang of mud and broken branches. She felt a deep ache in her heart, a hollow space where Tom’s steady presence used to be. Had he made it through? Was he safe? The questions echoed in the vast, empty space around her, and for a moment, a heavy blanket of despair threatened to smother her. She squeezed her eyes shut, picturing Tom’s kind, slow smile, the way he’d always listen so patiently when she chattered about the brightest flowers or the juiciest berries. He was her rock, her best friend, and the thought of facing this new, broken world without him was almost unbearable.

She took a deep, shaky breath, forcing herself to open her eyes. She had to be brave. Tom would want her to be brave. Her gaze swept across the landscape, a patchwork of unfamiliar mounds of earth and scattered debris. It was so different from the meadow she knew, the meadow they had called home. But then, a flicker of movement caught her eye. Far in the distance, nestled amongst a tangle of roots, something gleamed a familiar, comforting shade of red. It was a shell. A rounded, sturdy shell, just like Tom’s. Lily’s heart gave a mighty leap, a tiny drumbeat of hope against her ribs. Could it be? Was it really him?

A surge of energy, the kind that only true friendship can ignite, coursed through her. Her fear, momentarily forgotten, was replaced by a fierce determination. She unfurled her wings, giving them a tentative flutter. They still felt a little stiff, a little bruised from the storm, but they held. With a little push, she lifted herself into the air, her flight wobbly at first, like a newborn butterfly. She flew low, skimming over the damp earth, her eyes fixed on that distant splash of red. The journey felt long, each wingbeat a prayer. She passed by uprooted daisies
