Chapter 7
A Clever Plan
The merchant sneaked towards Barnaby's cottage under the cover of night. But Barnaby's neighbors, grateful for his kindness, had been watching. They devised a clever plan to protect the magical flower.
The moon, a sliver of silver in the inky sky, cast long, dancing shadows across the fields as Barnaby slept soundly in his newly mended cottage. The scent of baking bread, a luxury he could now afford, still lingered faintly in the air, a sweet lullaby to his peaceful dreams. He dreamt of laughter, of shared meals, of the gentle glow of his magnificent flower, now nestled safely in its sturdy pot, its coin-petals glinting even in the dim light. But while Barnaby slept, a different kind of shadow was creeping towards his home.
The greedy merchant, a man whose heart was as shriveled as a dried fig, tiptoed through the night. He imagined himself swimming in a sea of shimmering coins, his own coffers overflowing, his name whispered with awe and envy. The thought made his lips curl into a triumphant, albeit sinister, smile.
He reached the low garden fence, his steps unnaturally quiet on the dew-kissed grass. He could almost taste the success, the sweet victory of possession. He imagined himself plucking the flower, its magic his to command, its wealth his to hoard. He was so lost in his greedy fantasies that he didn’t notice the rustling in the bushes, the hushed murmurs that seemed to weave through the stillness of the night.
