A Humble Beginning

Barnaby was happy but stayed humble. He used the magical coins to mend his cottage roof, buy a warm coat, and share delicious food with his neighbors, who were also finding it hard to make ends meet.

Barnaby’s heart, which had always been as vast as the sky, now had a little more room to sing. The tiny, shimmering coins that tumbled from the magnificent flower were more than just metal; they were the whisper of a dream finally taking root. He looked at his cottage, its walls worn thin by years of wind and rain, its roof a patchwork of hopeful, yet often leaky, hope. He picked up a fallen coin, its surface cool and smooth against his calloused fingers, and a smile, as warm as the midday sun, spread across his weathered face.

He didn’t rush. Barnaby had spent so long waiting for anything at all, that the sudden abundance felt like a gentle river, not a sudden flood. First, he walked to the village cobbler, a kind woman named Elara who always had a sympathetic ear and a mended shoe. “Elara,” he called, his voice a little shaky with a happiness he hadn’t dared to feel before. “I was wondering if you might have time to look at my roof? It’s been letting in the sky a bit too much for my liking.”

Elara, who knew Barnaby’s struggles intimately, her own purse often as empty as his, looked up from the worn leather she was stitching. Her eyes, usually a little clouded with worry, brightened. “Barnaby! Your roof? Of course, of course! When would you like me to start?”
