Chapter 4
The Interview
The author sits with her father in his study, asking him to tell everything about his doubts and family history. He reveals that his mother (the grandmother) stopped praying after the war, but never stopped being Jewish. He shares a story about her smuggling challah in a church. The author struggles with her mother's bitterness and decides to ask her mother directly about her pain. The chapter ends with the author resolving to break the silence between them.

"Couldn't sleep?" he asked.
