The hum of the city was a constant thrum beneath Anya’s skin, a symphony of whirring mag-levs, distant sirens, and the incessant whisper of rain against ferro-concrete. Tonight, however, the usual cacophony was punctuated by a new rhythm, a staccato beat of digital chaos that Kai was orchestrating from his hidden server farm. Anya watched the data streams flicker across her augmented reality overlay, a shimmering tapestry of code and consequence. Each pulse represented a disruption, a calculated tremor designed to shake the foundations of Sterling Corp.
“You’re really going all out, aren’t you?” Anya murmured, her voice a low rasp against the hiss of the rain. She was crouched in the shadowed alcove of a disused transit station, the damp air clinging to her worn synth-leather jacket. The package, nestled securely in a reinforced compartment of her courier pack, felt like a small, charged entity against her back.
Kai’s voice, a dry, sardonic rasp, crackled through her comms. “All out? Anya, this is merely a gentle nudge. A polite suggestion that perhaps Sterling Corp’s iron grip on Neo-Kyoto is… less than absolute.” He paused, a faint, almost imperceptible sigh in his tone. “Besides, the more noise we make, the less likely they are to focus on the little bird flying out of the nest.”
