The Festival of Illusions descended upon Neo-Kyoto like a technicolor dream. Buildings, normally stoic monoliths of steel and glass, were draped in shimmering holographic banners depicting mythical creatures and ancient gods. Drones, shaped like origami cranes and fireflies, wove intricate patterns through the perpetually damp air, their lights reflecting a thousand fractured rainbows on the rain-slicked streets. The city, usually a symphony of exhaust fumes and distant sirens, pulsed with the thrum of amplified music and the joyous cacophony of a million voices, a stark contrast to the grim realities Anya usually navigated.

Tonight, however, the revelry was a shield. Anya, her worn synth-leather jacket a dull counterpoint to the vibrant chaos, clung to the shadows of a noodle stall, the aroma of spiced broth and grilled squid a fleeting comfort. Beside her, Kai, his face illuminated by the flickering glow of his datapad, looked less like a celebrated hacker and more like a cornered rat. His usual sarcastic smirk was replaced by a tight line of concentration, his fingers dancing across the holographic interface with a frantic urgency.

“Security’s tighter than a politician’s promise,” Kai muttered, his voice a low growl against the festive din. “Sterling’s pulled out all the stops. Facial recognition is layered with bio-scans, and the perimeter is crawling with more chrome-plated muscle than a black market chop shop.”
