Chapter 9
The Last Transmission
The rain hammered against Anya’s goggles, each drop a tiny explosion of light that her AR overlay instantly smoothed over. Neo-Kyoto, even at this late hour, pulsed with a frantic energy, a symphony of honking hovercars and the distant thrum of the city’s massive power conduits. She hugged the shadows of an alley, the scent of ozone and damp concrete filling her senses. The data chip, nestled securely in a hidden pocket of her jacket, felt like a live coal against her skin. It was supposed to be a simple delivery – a quick drop to a contact in the Lower District, no questions asked. But the contact had vanished, and in his place, a shadowy figure had pressed the chip into her hand with a whispered warning: "They know. Run."
And run she had. Enforcer Unit 7, a hulking silhouette of polished chrome and glowing red optics, had materialized from the downpour with unnerving speed. Its mechanical gait echoed on the slick pavement, a relentless hunter’s rhythm. Anya had weaved through crowded plazas, vaulted over overflowing refuse bins, and skidded around neon-drenched street corners, her AR goggles projecting a dizzying network of escape routes, each shimmering path a desperate hope. The chip wasn’t just data; it was a ticking bomb, and she was the fuse.
She ducked into a derelict noodle shop, the air thick with the ghost of fried noodles and stale soy sauce. The holographic geisha sign above the door flickered erratically, its programmed smile glitching. Anya deactivated her goggles, plunging the grimy interior into a soft, hazy gloom. Her heart hammered a frantic beat against her ribs. She needed to understand what was on this chip, and quickly. The enforcer wouldn't give up easily.
