Chapter 7
The Serpent's Coil
The rain had stopped, leaving Neo-Kyoto glistening like a spilled box of jewels. Anya, her worn synth-leather jacket slick with residual moisture, darted through a narrow alley, the glow of her AR goggles painting the grimy brickwork with shifting lines of code. The data chip, a sliver of obsidian no bigger than her thumbnail, felt like a burning ember in the hidden pocket of her jacket. It was too small, too innocuous for the panic that had seized her since she’d accidentally scooped it up during that botched delivery.

Her augmented vision, usually her greatest ally, was now a kaleidoscope of warning signals and flashing red alerts, a constant reminder of the danger she was in.
Anya skidded to a halt at the mouth of another alley, this one even narrower, choked with overflowing refuse bins and the stench of decaying synth-food. She risked a glance back. Nothing. Just the relentless neon glow of the city bleeding into the darkness. She needed a place to hide, a place to think. And more importantly, she needed someone to help her understand what was on this cursed chip.
