Echoes of the Past
The rain had finally ceased, leaving Neo-Kyoto glistening under the perpetual glow of its neon signs. Anya ducked into a narrow alley, the air thick with the smell of ozone and damp concrete. Her augmented reality goggles flickered, overlaying the grimy brickwork with a shimmering network of data streams. She’d been running for hours, her lungs burning, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The corporate enforcer, Unit 7, had been relentless, its metallic footsteps echoing ominously behind her through the labyrinthine streets.
She pressed herself against a cold, dripping wall, trying to control her ragged breathing. The data chip, a small, obsidian shard, felt heavy in her palm. It was supposed to be a simple delivery, a quick transfer of encrypted files to a contact in the lower sectors. But something had gone wrong. Terribly wrong. She’d stumbled upon a hidden compartment in the package, a compartment not listed on the manifest. Curiosity, a trait that had both served and nearly undone her countless times, had won out. And now, she was being hunted.
Anya risked a peek around the corner. The street was momentarily empty, bathed in the lurid pink and electric blue of a nearby noodle bar. She had to move. She activated her goggles, searching for an escape route. A faint, pulsing green line appeared, leading her further into the maze of alleys. It twisted and turned, a digital breadcrumb trail laid out just for her.
