The rain had stopped, leaving Neo-Kyoto glistening like a spilled box of jewels. Anya’s augmented reality goggles painted shimmering pathways over the slick, black streets, a secret map only she could see. The alleys, usually teeming with the hurried footsteps of late-night dwellers and the hiss of street food vendors, were eerily quiet. A chill, unrelated to the damp air, prickled Anya’s skin. The data chip, nestled securely in a hidden pocket of her jacket, felt like a hot coal against her ribs. It was supposed to be a simple pickup, a dead drop in the usual clandestine location. But when she’d reached the designated spot, a discarded data-slate lay alone, its usual encrypted beacon absent. And then, a glint of something metallic beneath a pile of refuse – the chip. It hadn’t been part of the plan.
Her internal comms buzzed, a low, urgent alert. *“Unit 7 approaching sector Gamma-9. High probability of hostile intent.”* Unit 7. The enforcers. Anya’s heart lurched. They were fast, efficient, and utterly without mercy. She ducked into a narrow passage, the neon signs of a noodle bar bleeding streaks of red and blue across the wet pavement. Her goggles flickered, overlaying the grimy brickwork with a cascade of code, highlighting a ventilation shaft barely wide enough for a child. It was a tight squeeze, but it was her only chance.
