The Oracle's Gambit
The rain, a constant, shimmering curtain over Neo-Kyoto, seemed to amplify the city's pulse. Anya’s augmented reality goggles, a second skin against her face, painted the downpour with streaks of neon data. Pathways, invisible to the unaugmented eye, pulsed with light, guiding her through the labyrinthine alleys. She was a ghost, a whisper in the wires, her nimble fingers dancing across her wrist-mounted interface, confirming her latest pickup. The data chip, cool and smooth, nestled securely in her palm. Just another job. Or so she’d thought.
A sudden, jarring buzz vibrated through her goggles, a crimson alert flashing across her vision. “Unauthorized data signature detected,” a synthesized voice rasped. Anya’s breath hitched. That wasn’t supposed to happen. A routine drop, a simple exchange in the shadowed alcove of a disused noodle stand. But the chip in her hand felt heavier now, charged with an unknown energy. A prickle of unease, cold and sharp, traced its way up her spine.
She spun around, her senses on high alert. The scent of ozone, sharp and metallic, cut through the damp, urban air. Two figures, clad in obsidian synth-leather, emerged from the gloom. Their movements were unnervingly uniform, their faces obscured by featureless chrome masks. Enforcers. Corporate enforcers. And they were looking directly at her.
