The air in the royal chambers hung thick and heavy, a cloying sweetness Elara hadn't noticed before, like wilting blossoms left too long in a sealed room. It was the scent of decay, a subtle poison that clung to the tapestries and seeped into the very stones of their home. She clutched the satchel at her side, its contents a fragile hope against the encroaching gloom. The Lumina Bloom, its petals still faintly pulsing with captured starlight, felt warm against her thigh, a stark contrast to the chill that had settled deep within her bones.

Kael was not at his study desk, illuminated by the artifact’s ethereal glow. He was slumped in his armchair, the artifact clutched to his chest like a lover. Elara’s heart constricted. This was not the Kael she knew, the man who would spend hours deciphering ancient prophecies with her by his side, his hand finding hers amidst the rustle of parchment. This was a husk, a vessel being drained by an insatiable hunger. The resentment she had harbored, a bitter ember stoked by his prolonged absence, flared for a fleeting moment, but it was quickly doused by a wave of fierce, protective love. He was lost, and she had to bring him back.
