The air in the Nez Perce encampment crackled with a tension that had been building for weeks. Chief Tolo, his brow furrowed, sat at the head of the council fire, the flickering flames casting long shadows that danced with the anxieties of his people. The fragile peace brokered in Episode 15, the Nez Perce Accord, had begun to fray at the edges, and the whispers of broken promises, like dry leaves skittering across the plains, were growing louder.

"They take more water each day," a young warrior, his voice tight with frustration, reported from the riverbank. "The salmon runs are thinner. Our horses graze on dust and withered grass where once the streams ran full."

An elder, his face a roadmap of seasons lived and battles fought, nodded gravely. "The government men speak with forked tongues. They promise protection, then send more of their own to claim what is ours." His gaze swept over the assembled faces, a silent plea for understanding. "They do not see the land as we do. They see only earth to be owned, water to be dammed, game to be slaughtered without thought."
