Her youngest, little Samuel, coughed weakly beside her, his small body wracked with a fever that had clung to him for days. Eliza’s heart ached with a primal fear, a fear that whispered of the graves they had already passed, the stark crosses marking the final resting place of those less fortunate. She remembered the vibrant hope that had filled her as they’d set out, the promise of fertile lands and a new beginning. She looked at her husband, Thomas, his brow furrowed with the strain of guiding their oxen, his movements stiff with exhaustion. He offered a weak smile, a wordless reassurance that did little to quell the gnawing anxiety in her stomach. They had faced broken wagons, treacherous river crossings, and the constant, gnawing fear of the unknown. But it was the unseen enemy, the insidious sickness that stalked their camps, that truly terrified her.
