Chapter 9

The Guardian of the Tower

Mikutis and Jonas land their balloon at the tower where the fox is confronted by a copper-feathered eagle. The eagle reveals that the tower is a sacred place of flight and the moonmint orb is a key to an ancient sky gate. After negotiation, the eagle allows the fox to keep the orb in exchange for a promise to use it wisely. The fox reluctantly agrees and returns the orb to Jonas. As they prepare to leave, the eagle warns of a dark shadow approaching from the mountains, hinting at a new threat. The chapter ends with the group spotting a strange, silent balloon on the horizon.

The balloon drifted closer to the tower, its shadow gliding over the crumbling stones. Mikutis gripped the edge of the basket, his green eyes fixed on the scene above. The fox stood frozen on the topmost ledge, the moonmint orb clutched tightly in his paw. The eagle loomed over him, copper feathers gleaming in the afternoon light, wings spread wide like a shield.

“I said you are not welcome,” the eagle repeated, his voice sharp as a stone. “That orb belongs to the sky, not to a sneaking creature of the earth.”

The fox’s ears flattened. He glanced down at the balloon, then back at the eagle. “I found it fair and square,” he said, but his voice wavered. “I need it for my own flight.”
