Chapter 5: The Search for Moonmint
Mikutis returns to Jonas with the balloon fragment and explains Laima's secret about moonmint. They venture to the eastern hill at midnight, find the herb growing in a moonlit patch, but also discover a torn piece of fabric from another balloon, hinting at a mysterious rival.
Mikutis hurried down the hill, the cloth fragment clamped gently in his jaws. The night air was cool and smelled of damp grass and earth. He could still hear the soft mew from the cave behind him, but he forced himself not to look back. Laima had told him to go. He trusted her.
By the time he reached the barnyard, the moon had climbed higher, casting silver shadows across the yard. A light flickered in Jonas's workshop—a small shed near the old apple tree. Mikutis crept to the door and pushed it open with his nose.
Jonas was bent over a pile of ropes and canvas, muttering to himself. His face lit up when he saw the cat. "Mikutis! There you are. I was starting to worry. And what's that you've brought?"
