Chapter 4
Chapter 4: The Cave of the Star Cat
Mikutis follows the mysterious light into a hidden cave behind the stone circle. Inside, he discovers the ghost of a legendary cat who once flew in a balloon and learns about the secret to successful flight. The ghost gives him a piece of ancient balloon fabric and a warning about the dangers of the sky. Mikutis emerges with new resolve to help Jonas, but a strange sound from the cave hints at further mysteries.
The darkness swallowed Mikutis whole. The crack behind the stone was narrow, scraping his fur as he squeezed through, but the cool draft pulled him forward. He blinked, letting his eyes adjust. Mikutis crept along the tunnel. The walls were damp and rough, and the air smelled of old stone and something else—something faintly sweet, like dried grass and sunshine. His whiskers twitched. The light moved slowly, always staying just ahead, never letting him catch up but never leaving him alone.
The tunnel sloped downward, then opened into a chamber. Mikutis stopped and stared. The ceiling was high above him, studded with small crystals that caught the light and scattered it like stars. In the center of the chamber, the golden glow hovered over a flat rock. And on that rock sat a cat.
