Chapter 25
The Sky-Fall
Mikutis and his friends emerge from the oak to find the farm's sky cracking and a dark shadow descending. Bobutė leads them in singing the Heart's song, but it only slows the darkness. The star cat arrives, weakened, and reveals they must find the 'first light' hidden in the farm's oldest memory, located at the ancient well. As they race to the well, the shadow closes in, and Mikutis sees a glimmer at the bottom, setting up the next challenge.
The ground trembled as Mikutis burst from the roots of the old oak, Jonas and Bobutė right behind him. The fox scrambled out, followed by Laima, whose glow flickered like a candle in the wind. The night air was thick with a strange, heavy silence. The stars above the farm were gone. In their place, a jagged crack split the sky, oozing a dark, oily light that dripped downward like slow rain.
Mikutis’s ears flattened. “It’s worse than we thought.”
Bobutė’s amber eyes scanned the horizon. “The sky-fall has begun. The old guardians are breaking through from the other side.”
