Chapter 24: The Guardian Beneath the Oak

Mikutis, Jonas, Bobutė, the fox, and Laima gather at the old oak tree. They discover the entrance to the Heart of the Earth guarded by an ancient earth spirit, the Keeper of Roots. The Keeper tests their intentions by asking each to give up a memory of the farm. Mikutis offers a memory of chasing fireflies, Jonas offers a memory of his first balloon, and Bobutė offers a memory of her circus adventure. The Keeper accepts and opens the way, but warns that the Heart of the Earth is not a seed but a living song that must be sung into harmony. As they descend, the ground shakes violently, and a new crack splits the sky above, threatening to consume the farm.
