Chapter 23: The Gate's Return
Mikutis and Jonas follow the first guardian through the star tunnel, emerging at the Forgotten Gate where Vilkas and Karvė Marija wait. The first guardian explains the orb must be placed in the gate's heart to seal it and stop the old guardians from waking. They succeed, but a new crack forms in the farm's sky, and Bobutė arrives with a warning of a deeper imbalance.
The star tunnel shimmered around Mikutis and Jonas, its walls made of light and memory. The first guardian glided ahead, its form flickering like a candle in a breeze. Mikutis carried the marble-sized orb in his mouth, its warmth pulsing against his tongue. Each step felt lighter than the last, as if the tunnel itself was carrying them forward.
"How much farther?" Jonas asked, his voice echoing in the strange space.
The first guardian did not turn. "As far as the last step you take together."
