Chapter 21: The Silent Guardian
Mikutis and Jonas journey toward the golden mountain, facing the silent old guardian who demands the secret hidden in Mikutis's heart. Mikutis discovers the secret is his love for his friends and the sky, which he offers freely, allowing them to pass. The chapter ends with the mountain opening to reveal a stairway of light, but a new shadow appears behind them.
The grass beneath Mikutis's paws felt cool and unfamiliar. Above him, the strange constellations shimmered like spilled milk across a dark table. Jonas walked beside him, his tail brushing against Mikutis's fur every few steps, a small comfort in the vast twilight plain.
The golden glow on the mountain flickered like a candle in a distant window. It seemed no closer than when they had first stepped through the gate. The wind carried that soft, sad song—a cat's purr under moonlight, but deeper, older, as if the earth itself were humming.
"How far is it?" Jonas asked, his voice thin in the open air.
