Chapter 18: The Gate of Echoes
Mikutis and Jonas explore the crystal tower, encountering the Gate of Echoes where their thoughts and fears are reflected. They must overcome a trick of the darkness that tries to make them doubt each other, and they reach the Bridge of Silence, where they learn to trust without words.
The door clicked shut, and the low hum that had filled the tower grew louder. Mikutis and Jonas stood in a narrow hallway made of crystal, its walls so clear they could see their own reflections multiplied into infinity. But the reflections did not move with them. Instead, each reflection stared back with wide, frightened eyes, as if trapped behind the glass.
“I don’t like this,” Jonas whispered, his voice bouncing off the walls and returning in strange echoes.
Mikutis’s whiskers twitched. The cold voice that had spoken at the entrance was gone, but the air felt thick, heavy with something that pressed against his ears. “We have to find the Gate of Echoes,” he said, remembering the first guardian’s words. “That’s the first step to the Heart of the Sky.”
