Chapter 10
The Shadow Over the Farm
Mikutis, Jonas, and the fox land their balloon at the farm, but the black sphere hovers above. Bobutė warns that it is a 'sky watcher' from a forgotten time. The sphere releases a glowing message that leads them to a hidden underground chamber beneath the barn, where they discover an ancient map showing a network of sky gates. A new voice echoes from the chamber, hinting at a forgotten civilization.
The balloon descended fast, the wind whipping through the basket. Mikutis clung to the edge, his fur standing on end. Above them, the black sphere hung motionless, like a dark eye watching their every move. It made no sound, but the air around it felt cold and heavy.
“Hold on!” Jonas shouted, pulling the release rope. The balloon lurched, and the ground rushed up to meet them. The fence of the pasture loomed, and then the basket bumped and scraped across the grass. They tumbled out, landing in a heap near the barn door.
Mikutis shook himself and looked up. The black sphere still hovered, but it did not follow them down. It stayed high above, a dark spot against the blue sky.
