The air in Elder Maeve's cottage hung thick and still, smelling of dried lavender and something else, something earthy and ancient that Elara couldn’t quite place. Sunlight, strained through a single, small window, illuminated dust motes dancing in the silence. Elara stood before the elder, her heart thrumming a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She had expected resistance, a wall of unwavering tradition, but the flicker of something akin to fear in Maeve’s eyes was a chink in the formidable armor.

“You speak of betrayal, Elder,” Elara began, her voice soft but firm, echoing the quiet intensity of the room. “Chef Dubois. He was betrayed, wasn’t he? And this betrayal is tied to the very heart of your village, to the knowledge you guard so fiercely.”

Maeve’s gnarled hands, usually busy with some intricate weaving or the grinding of herbs, lay still in her lap. Her gaze, sharp as a winter wind, fixed on Elara. “The past is a dangerous place, child. It holds shadows that do not wish to be disturbed.”
