The air in Chef Antoine Dubois’s temporary kitchen, a cramped space tucked away behind the village’s communal hall, hung heavy with the ghost of spices and the metallic tang of something far less pleasant. Elara Vance, her brow furrowed, sifted through the scattered remnants of the chef's life. The ingredients, painstakingly arranged for a feast that would never be, lay like fallen soldiers on the worn wooden counter. Wild mushrooms, their caps dusted with an unnatural sheen, sat beside a basket of berries so dark they seemed to absorb the light. And then there were the bones, small and impossibly delicate, arranged in a pattern Elara couldn’t quite decipher.

She’d spent hours poring over Dubois’s recipe notes, the elegant script a stark contrast to the grim reality of his end. But something felt incomplete, a missing piece in the puzzle of his final hours. Her fingers brushed against a slightly thicker sheaf of parchment, tucked beneath a bundle of dried herbs. It wasn’t a recipe. It was a journal, Dubois’s private thoughts, scrawled in a hurried, almost frantic hand.

“They watch,” the first entry read, the ink bleeding slightly as if from a trembling hand. “The eyes are everywhere. Not just the villagers, but the ancient ones. They know I’m here. They know what I seek.”
