Chapter 6
A Cryptic Connection
Elara researches the Hippocratic phrase, finding obscure links to Oakhaven's founding. The saying seems to be a warning, or a confession.
The scent of dried herbs and old parchment clung to Elara like a second skin. Her small, makeshift laboratory, carved out of a disused storeroom in the inn, was a stark contrast to the vibrant, chaotic kitchen where Chef Dubois had met his end. Here, under the flickering lamplight, the air was thick with the quiet hum of her research. The phrase, etched onto the chef's deathbed as if by his own trembling hand, echoed in her mind: "Primum non nocere." *First, do no harm.*
It was a Hippocratic oath, a physician's fundamental promise. But what was a world-renowned chef doing with such a phrase? And why was it whispered alongside the strange, almost alien ingredients laid out for the Harvest Feast? Elara had spent hours poring over dusty tomes, her fingers tracing faded ink, her mind racing. She’d found it in a brittle, leather-bound journal, its pages brittle as autumn leaves. The journal belonged to Elara’s own great-great-aunt, a woman named Isobel Vance, who had apparently been a healer in Oakhaven generations ago. Isobel’s handwriting, spidery and elegant, spoke of a time when the village was even more isolated, its traditions fiercely guarded. And there, nestled between entries about poultices and foraging, was a passage that made Elara’s heart leap.
