The air in Elder Maeve’s cottage hung thick with the scent of dried herbs, a potent perfume that clung to the rough-hewn wooden beams and seeped into the very marrow of the small dwelling. Sunlight, strained through a grimy windowpane, illuminated dust motes dancing in the stillness. Dr. Elara Vance shifted on the low stool, the unfamiliar discomfort a small price for the knowledge she hoped to glean. Before her, spread across a worn, embroidered cloth, lay the peculiar assortment of ingredients that had been discovered beside Chef Antoine Dubois's lifeless body.

Elder Maeve, her face a roadmap of wrinkles, her eyes sharp and unwavering, gestured with a gnarled finger towards a bundle of dark, leafy sprigs. "This," she rasped, her voice like dry leaves skittering across stone, "is *pelyte*. For courage. To face the shadows."

Elara’s brow furrowed. Courage? In a recipe? She’d spent years studying the precise chemical compounds of modern medicine, the quantifiable effects of each drug. This talk of herbs bestowing courage felt like stepping back into a forgotten age. "And this one?" she prompted, pointing to a cluster of tiny, star-shaped flowers, their petals a faded violet.
