Echoes of the Past
Elara begins her investigation, examining the peculiar ingredients. They seem to hold clues not just to Dubois's death, but to Oakhaven's hidden history.
The air in Chef Dubois’s makeshift kitchen, once thick with the promise of a magnificent feast, now hung heavy with a chilling stillness. Dr. Elara Vance, her brow furrowed, circled the long wooden table where the remnants of the chef’s final preparations lay scattered. It wasn’t just the overturned bowls and scattered flour that caught her eye, but the ingredients themselves. They were unlike anything she’d seen in her medical textbooks, or frankly, in any cookbook she’d ever browsed.
There were roots, gnarled and dark like ancient fingers, bundled with dried herbs that released a faint, peppery scent when she leaned closer. Beside them sat a small, intricately carved wooden box, its lid slightly ajar, revealing a shimmering, opalescent powder. And then there were the berries, plump and a deep, almost unnatural shade of indigo, nestled in a bed of moss. Elara, ever the scientist, reached for her satchel, pulling out a small, sterile bag. She carefully collected a sample of each, her gloved fingers surprisingly steady.
“Remarkable,” she murmured, more to herself than to the silent, watchful villagers gathered at the doorway. Elder Maeve stood at the front, her gaze like flint, her lips pressed into a thin, unyielding line. Kael, a young man with restless eyes that darted between Elara and the table, shifted his weight uncomfortably.
