Elara knelt beside the meticulously arranged ingredients, her gloved fingers tracing the delicate veins of a dried moonpetal. The air in Chef Antoine Dubois’s makeshift kitchen, once thick with the scent of exotic spices and anticipation, now held a chilling stillness. Around her, the villagers watched, a sea of wary faces, their silence a heavy blanket. Elder Maeve stood closest, her gaze sharp, a silent challenge in her ancient eyes. Elara felt the weight of their judgment, the unspoken question hanging in the air: *Could this outsider truly understand?*
She’d spent the morning piecing together the fragments Dubois had left behind. Not just the physical clues – the peculiar herbs, the unidentifiable roots, the glistening, obsidian-like seeds – but the intangible ones too. The way the moonpetal was positioned, almost like a star chart, and the cluster of whispergrass, arranged to mimic the swirling currents of a river. It was a language, she was certain, a culinary code Dubois had been trying to decipher or perhaps even leave as a warning.
“He was preparing the Feast of the First Bloom,” Maeve stated, her voice a low rumble. “A ritual as old as the stones beneath our feet. He sought to honor the old ways.”
