Elara stood, her heart a frantic hummingbird against her ribs, the last fragments of Chef Dubois’s final moments replaying in her mind. The gleam of his eyes, the tremor in his hand as he’d reached for the peculiar, star-shaped spice, the hushed, almost reverent way he’d spoken of the ‘Old Ways’. And then, the chilling echo of Elder Maeve’s words, delivered with a stillness that belied the storm she’d unleashed.

"It was not poison, Doctor," Maeve had said, her voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the ancient stones of the hall. "Not in the way you understand it. It was… a surrender."

Elara’s gaze swept across the faces gathered. The villagers, a sea of weathered visages, were a mixture of shock, fear, and a strange, resigned acceptance. Kael stood near the back, his knuckles white where he gripped the edge of a rough-hewn table, his eyes wide and fixed on Maeve.
