A Confrontation

Elara confronts a villager who had the most to lose from Dubois's discoveries, using her knowledge of ancient practices against them.

The air in Elder Maeve’s cottage was thick with the scent of dried herbs and something else, something sharp and acrid that tickled Elara’s nose. It was the smell of secrets, she thought, and Maeve herself, hunched over a wooden table, seemed to embody them. Sunlight, strained through a single, grimy windowpane, illuminated dust motes dancing around the elder’s gnarled hands as she meticulously arranged small, dried roots. Elara stood just inside the doorway, her heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against her ribs. This was it. The confrontation.

“Elder Maeve,” Elara began, her voice steady despite the tremor in her gut. “We need to talk about Chef Dubois.”

Maeve didn’t look up immediately. Her fingers continued their delicate work, each movement deliberate, practiced. The silence stretched, taut and unnerving, before she finally sighed, a sound like wind rustling through dry leaves. “The doctor has questions. Always questions.” Her voice was raspy, aged like the timbers of her home.
