The air in the village of Veridia hung thick and heavy, not with the usual scent of woodsmoke and damp earth, but with a cloying, sickly sweetness that Elara couldn't quite place. It clung to her tongue, a phantom taste of decay. She stood in the heart of the communal kitchen, the scene of Chef Antoine Dubois’s final, fatal moments. The usual vibrant chaos of preparation had been frozen, a macabre tableau. The ingredients, once destined for a celebratory feast, now seemed to mock her. Luminescent mushrooms, their caps speckled like a starry night, lay beside a pile of obsidian-black berries, their skins glistening with an unnatural sheen. Beside them, a single, gnarled root, twisted like an ancient hand, pulsed with a faint, earthy aroma.
Elder Maeve stood by the hearth, her face a mask of impassive granite, her eyes, like chips of ancient amber, watching Elara with an unreadable intensity. Kael, his young face a battlefield of apprehension and curiosity, hovered near the doorway, his gaze darting between Elara and the Elder.
“This is not just food, is it?” Elara’s voice, usually clear and steady, held a tremor she couldn’t entirely suppress. She gestured to the peculiar collection of ingredients. “These aren’t for a regular feast. They’re… potent.”
